Mariah Carey Engaged in Court Dispute With Brother Over Late Mother’s Estate

American Singer-Songwriter/Record Producer, Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is facing legal challenges as she navigates family drama just weeks after losing both her mother and sister on the same day, as reported by In Touch. According to court filings obtained by In Touch, a New York judge has directed Mariah, now 55, and her brother to participate in depositions related to his lawsuit by January 31, 2025.

This lawsuit dates back to 2021 when Mariah’s estranged brother, Morgan Carey, took legal action against her over statements she made in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

Mariah Carey defends her claims about Morgan’s violent behavior and alleged drug involvement, stating they were “true or substantially true.”

In the lawsuit, Morgan claimed that Mariah falsely portrayed him as violent and involved in drug dealing during their upbringing. Mariah described in her memoir several instances of physical altercations involving Morgan and their parents. She recounted, “It took twelve cops to separate my brother and father.

The big bodies of men, tangled like a storm, crashed into the living room. I was a young girl with few memories of a protective brother. More often, I felt the need to shield myself, and at times, I even found myself protecting my mother from him.”

Another excerpt from her book noted, “A sudden loud, sharp noise, like a gunshot, echoed through the house. My brother had shoved my mother with such force that she collided with the wall, producing a cracking sound.”

Morgan has firmly denied the accusations, asserting that he was never physically violent with their parents and never engaged in drug dealing. He claims that Mariah’s memoir severely damaged his reputation, leading him to seek unspecified compensation.

In her defense, Mariah maintained that her statements were “true or substantially true.” She also revealed that her mother had informed her about Morgan’s involvement with drugs. Additionally, Mariah shared that a well-known photographer, familiar with her brother, had told her similar things about his activities.

A third individual, a hairstylist, also supported these claims, Mariah noted in her response. Mariah petitioned the court to dismiss the lawsuit entirely, and while much of Morgan’s case was thrown out last year, he was permitted to proceed with claims related to the drug allegations.

During a recent court session, it was ordered that both Mariah and Morgan must complete their depositions by January 2025. However, Mariah has the right to request limitations on the extent of the discovery process.

This legal matter came to play on August 20, just days before Mariah and Morgan’s mother, Patricia Carey, and sister, Alison Carey, passed away on the same day. “My heart is shattered by the loss of my mother this past weekend.

Tragically, my sister also passed away on the same day,” Mariah shared with People. “I am grateful that I could spend the last week with my mother before she left us,” she continued, expressing her appreciation for the support she’s received while asking for privacy during this difficult period.

Alison had filed a separate lawsuit against Mariah over the memoir, though her case was unresolved at the time of her death.
