Plot Overview

William Andersen, an ageing cowboy who is going on a 400-mile cattle drive, must find replacement drivers when his workers leave to join a gold rush. As he rides into the place, Anderson finds it deserted. Anse Peterson, his friend, proposes using local schoolboys. Even though he gets to meet them, Andersen is not convinced by the boys’ unruly behaviour.

The boys arrive on the ranch of Andersen in the morning to volunteer. Before hiring the boys, he decides to test their skills. He asks them to maintain themselves on top of a moving horse. The boys do so with much ease. That is when Cimarron, who is the eldest out of the others, show off his superb skills.

After taming and riding the test horse, Cimarron gets into a fight with Slim, the oldest of the boys, after Cimarron calls Slim’s mother a prostitute. Cimarron’s skills are impressive to Anderson, but because of Cimarron’s angry nature, he doesn’t take him. The boys end up being hired by Andersen because he has no other alternatives.

An unusual group of men led by Asa Watts show up at Andersen’s ranch in need of work while he and the boy’s prep for the cattle drive. Anderson doesn’t hire Watts because apparently everything he told about his past was a lie. Jebediah Nightlinger, a Black camp cook, appears with a chuck wagon, completing Anderson’s trail crew.

The Cattle Drive

Following Andersen’s continued instruction, the boys learn to rope, brand, and herd cattle and later embark on the cattle drive. Anderson worries because he notices that Cimarron is following them. Although he keeps his distance, Anderson doesn’t want him anywhere near the drive. Slim slips off his horse while crossing a river and, not being able to swim, begins to drown.

Though Slim is saved by Cimarron, Andersen scolds Bob for his stuttering problem and gives him the ultimatum to stop or go back home alone. This causes Bob to use foul language against Anderson out of his irritation. But due to this, he losses his stutter. Cimarron and Bob are allowed to stay by Andersen.
