Early Life

Malveaux was born in Lansing, Michigan, to parents of Louisiana Creole descent. Her parents have French, Spanish, and African ancestry. Several members of Malveaux’s family identify as white, biracial, or black, and she considers herself black. Floyd Joseph Malveaux, her father, was a doctor who served as dean of Howard University’s College of Medicine. Her mother’s name is Myrna Maria Ruiz. She used to be a school teacher but is now retired. On “Finding Your Roots”, it was revealed that her French roots trace back to a 17th-century fur trader from Quebec, that one of her ancestors in Louisiana was a free black who owned slaves, and her seven-great-grandmother was Native American.

In 1984, Malveaux graduated from Centennial High School in Ellicott City, Maryland, and then Harvard College with an A.B. cum laude in sociology. Her senior thesis was influenced by the semester that she had spent at Howard University. Soledad O’Brien, the future CNN reporter, was her classmate at Harvard. The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism awarded her a master’s degree in broadcasting in 1991. Also, Malveaux is part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

From 1992 to 1996, Malveaux worked as a reporter for New England Cable News in Boston. Later, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked as a “rock-and-roll” reporter for NBC affiliate WRC-TV from 1996-1999. Tim Russert recruited Malveaux to join NBC News in 1999. At first, she used to report from Washington, and later she reported from Chicago. Her stories included the impeachment of Bill Clinton, Elián González, the Kosovo War, the 2000 Presidential Election, and the 9/11 attacks.

A member of the National Association of Black Journalists, Malveaux served as the moderator of the NABJ’s 31st annual convention in August 2007. A two-part series on the 2008 presidential candidates by Malveaux aired in advance of the Democratic and Republican national conventions. The documentary focused on then-Senator Barack Obama. Furthermore, in January 2008, she served as one of the panellists for CNN’s and the Congressional Black Caucus Institute’s debate on the Democratic presidential candidates in South Carolina.
