1899: A New Series Announced By “Dark” Creators For Netflix

Dark is a hit series on Netflix, the streaming giant. It ended only a while ago. Nevertheless, the creators Jantje Friese, as well as Brown bo Odar, are quite aware of their next project for the streaming giant for quite some time now. Back in November of 2018, it was announced by Netflix that they are coming up with their next project. It will have the Dark creators on its set. The series will be titled 1899. It is part of the overall deal that has been made with the streaming service. As it is already suggested by the title, this show is going to be a period drama.

The creators have now revealed the synopsis for the show too. It suggests that this show will also employ a variety of thriller and horror elements to it. All this while, the show is currently at a very early stage in production. But if the Dark creators are behind this production, we can expect many people paying close attention to the show. The development is everything a curious fan of the duo can talk about. Thus, here is everything that we do know about the series from the creators of Dark and the production company they use, that is, Dark Ways.

As for the plot of 1899, the original series throws the entire spotlight on a migrant steamship. It is heading towards the west to leave the old continent. It starts in London and will only stop in New York. In this ship, we see passengers who are a mixed bag of European origins. They all are united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and a future they have in their eyes before going abroad. But later in the scenes, they find out about another migrant ship that is adrift in the open sea.

Their journey then takes a very new turn because the thing that they find onboard will surely turn all of their journeys into a horrifying nightmare for sure. Friese and Odar have even released a joint statement. It says that what really made them connect to this whole idea was the concept of having a truly European show which is mixed with cast members from a variety of different countries. The duo reveals that at the center of the show is the question about what divides us and unites us.

It shows us how fear can prove to be a trigger factor for the dividing part. Also, during a panel that was happening in Berlinale back in February of 2020, it was revealed that the primary language for 1899 is going to be English. It is unlike Dark, which was set in German itself. Also, at this point in time, no set cast members have been announced for the show. However, we can expect some of the other announcements in the upcoming month or so.
