This also marks the first movie of Nate Parker since the rape allegations against him derailed his movie Birth of a Nation. The movie had unfortunately opened up to negative reviews from critics and holds a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes and was rated 23 out of 100 on Metacritic. However, it did have some positive reviews. The Hollywood Reporter said that the American Skin was cheered by the Venice Audience and received a 7-minute standing ovation, and even won Best Picture at the film festival.

The story focuses on Lincoln Jefferson, a U.S Marine veteran who works as a janitor at a prestigious junior high school. He tries to mend his relationship with his son after a divorce. One night, during a routine police traffic stop, his son is killed by a police officer, who is later found innocent without standing trial. Lincoln decides to finally put matters into his own hands and bring justice for his son. This movie tackles many issues that are happening in this world today, namely racial inequality and police violence.

Trailer Breakdown

Here’s the trailer for the movie:

This trailer signifies the thrill-packed into the film. A veteran remembers the event that took place during a shootout in a police confrontation. The matters escalated as his son decided to record the scene. Both these guys were pulled over to look for the details, and this is when the son took out his camera. The officer on the spot took out his gun and shot the 14-year-old kid. In the years that follow, the father returns for revenge. The officer that shot his son was never brought to justice.

This man took it upon himself and a few former army colleagues to raid a police station.  The father tried to explain his point that action is needed against the police officers that destroyed his family. These armed men have heavy machine guns, and they take the entire station hostage. What followed was an assault that led to a lot of police officers dead. It is a disturbing yet intriguing story that reflects the racial injustice in America and how it can lead to someone resorting to such drastic actions.
