Directed by Craig Brewer, Coming 2 America is an upcoming American comedy film based on the characters created by Eddie Murphy. It is the sequel to the 1988 film “Coming to America,” where Eddie Murphy plays the role of Akeem Joffer, the Crown Prince of the fictional African country called Zamunda. In the story, Akeem, alongside his friend and personal aide Semmi, set off to New York in the boroughs of Queens in the hope of finding a woman who would love him for himself and not social status.
After getting entry-level jobs and understanding the commoner’s way of living, Akeem finds the perfect woman in Lisa McDowell, who he meets at a rally. Following some events of back and forth due to complications caused by Lisa’s boyfriend Darryl, Lisa’s dad Cleo McDowell and his father, “King Jaffe,” Akeem finally accepts his father’s proposal to marry the bride of his choosing. At the wedding ceremony, a heartbroken Akeem is surprised to find out that his bride-to-be is Lisa herself, and they get wedded off.
Plot – Coming 2 America
Set after the events of the first film, the newly crowned King Akeem Joffer, alongside Semmi, again set off on a journey to America. This time, they are on a mission to find Akeem’s illegitimate son, Lavelle, who he never knew about. They embark on this journey to honor the former King Jaffe’s dying wish to find and groom the next crown king of Zamunda. This is because, according to Zamunda’s law – only a male heir can take the throne, whereas Akeem and Lisa have a daughter, thus being ineligible. So, they again transverse the globe, from the African Nation Zamunda to boroughs of Queens, New York, where it all started.
Back in January 2017, an announcement was made regarding the impending sequel to the 1988 film, “Coming to America.” On August 17, 2019, the filming officially began in Atlanta, Georgia. Even rapper Rick Ross confirmed that his mega-mansion in Georgia would be used as a location for the filming. Filming officially wrapped up on November 9, 2019.
The movie faced multiple delays in its release. Initially scheduled to have a theatrical release on August 7, 2020, in the United States and Canada by Paramount Pictures, the film was pushed back to December 18, 2020. But, after the pandemic began, it was unrealistic for Paramount to have a theatrical release everywhere; therefore, the right to the distribution of the movie was sold off to Amazon Studios for $125 million on October 13, 2020. Now, after its trailer has finally arrived, we can confirm that “Coming 2 America” will have its digital release on March 5, 2021, on Prime Video.
After 32 years of the original film, Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall will be coming back to reprise their roles as Akeem Jaffer and Semmi. They are joined by the original cast members, including Shari Headley as Lisa McDowell, James Earl Jones as King Jaffe, John Amos as Cleo McDowell, and Vanessa Bell Calloway as Imani. Some new additions include Jermaine Fowler as Lavelle, Leslie Jones as Lavelle’s mother, Tracy Morgan as Reem, KiKi Layne as Meeka Joffer, Wesley Snipes as General Izzi, and Teyana Taylor as General Izzi’s henchwoman.
We are again certain to see humorous multiple roles played by both Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall iconic to the first film.
