Firefly Lane: Netflix’s Coming of Age Upcoming Show

Firefly Lane
Young Tully and Kate

Looking for a sweet and delightful watch to accompany you with the chilly evenings? Then probably, the upcoming Netflix series titled Firefly Lane might be the right treatment for you. Starring Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke in lead roles as Tully and Kate, respectively, the series portrays the heartwarming equation between two female friends who vow to be there for each other all their lives. The official trailer and a confirmed release date have been released by the online streaming platform, and we can’t help but wait to witness the real-life charismatic friendship between two friends, who’ve seen each other grow and expand their horizons, each in their own individual way. The series is an adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s novel that was titled under the same name.

Young Tully and Kate

Firefly Lane’s trailer begins with the introduction of two teenage girls, totally opposite of each other’s qualities, be it physically, mentally, or emotionally. We see a shy and socially awkward girl Kate, who was convinced by her mother that she might end up getting a friend of her age and it would be so nice to have someone to share everything with. Kate takes a bus on the firefly lane and when a boy attempts to tease her, to her rescue comes to a bold and brash Katy who sits beside her. Two parallel lines seemed to have reached a point of intersection in their lives-the point where the world knew them as “Tully and Kate”, the girls who are inseparable and have been there for each other for the past 30 years.

After seeing the glimpses of the young girls, we see them all grown up. The girls have stepped into adulthood together and still are each other’s torchbearer of hope and support. Tully always wanted to prove her worth to the world. She wanted to stand out and reach the epitome of fame and success, which she tries to achieve and eventually gets it. Kate feels that Tully succeeds in everything she tries, and that’s the reason she hadn’t tasted failure and downfall. Where Tully has aimed to build her life on her own, Kate had always dreamt of falling in love, marrying, having kids, and living an ordinary life, which she ends up choosing.

Kate is a victim of low self-esteem and feels that she goes along with the journey Tully chooses for herself. In her best friend’s defense, Tully makes her aware of how brave Kate is, more than anybody else, and how she has managed to keep together her family, which Tully won’t ever be able to do. Even after being there with each other’s every day important and not-so-important events of life, the two get stuck between a maze of the love triangle that may end up tearing the two. Will some complications be the sole reason for tearing apart two soulmates who promised to stick together all their life? Are friendships strong enough to survive till the end of life?

Katherine and Sarah as Tully and Kate

Well, the series seems to be an emotional compilation of events that are weaved together and feels like a wave of fresh air. The coming of age friendship story is likely to leave you teary-eyed and take you back the memory lane. Created by Maggie Friedman, Firefly Lane will premiere on Netflix on 3 February 2021.
