It is based on the graphic novel Sandcastle, written by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters in French. The story revolves around a group of people who find themselves ageing swiftly on a deserted beach.

After receiving Sandcastle as a Father’s Day gift, Shyamalan decided to make a film out of it. In September 2019, the filmmaker announced a partnership with Universal Pictures for an untitled project. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2010, the film was filmed for three months in the Dominican Republic by cinematographer Michael Gioulakis. The Old movie had its premiere at Jazz at Lincoln Center on 19th July 2021. On July 23rd, 2021, Old was released in theatres. Critics have praised the cinematography and concept of the film but faulted the screenplay and acting. The movie grossed $87.5 million worldwide. The movie’s themes and twist ending drew polarized reactions. Currently, the movie is not available on any streaming platform, including Netflix. Old Movie Synopsis

As a final family vacation before they divorce, Guy and Prisca Cappa take their young children Maddox and Trent to a tropical resort. After consulting with the resort’s manager, the family visits a remote beach that is also occupied by three other parties. In addition to Mid-Sized Sedan, there are Charles and Chrystal, their daughter Kara. Then there’s Agnes, Charles’s mom, as well as Jarin and Patricia Carmichael, who have a close relationship. While on vacation, the Mid-Sized Sedan’s companion drowns, and Agnes passes away suddenly. Soon, the children become teenagers, and strange things start to happen. A year of growth passes every 30 minutes on the beach while the group realizes they are swiftly ageing. Additionally, one family member has a medical condition, and if they try to leave, they will blackout and wake up on the beach.

As Kara and Trent’s bond develops, they give birth quickly, but the baby dies as a result of the beach’s strong effects. Trent and Maddox discover the notebook of a previous traveller as the group struggles to escape the beach, along with signs that they are being watched. As Charles’s schizophrenia worsens, he kills a mid-sized sedan in an attempt to leave. Kara falls to her death while looking for a way off while Jarin drowns, and Patricia dies when her epilepsy and hypocalcemia become exacerbated. During the course of a schizophrenic episode, Charles finally pulls a knife on a now-blind Guy, inciting an infection that ultimately kills him. At the end of the night, Prisca and Guy make amends before they die moments apart.

Do they find their way out of the beach?

Trent ponders a secret message he had received from the manager’s nephew, which he deduces is related to an underwater coral passage when he awakens the next morning with only Maddox and Trent left. He and his sister swim through the coral. They believe that the passage will allow them to leave the beach without losing consciousness. When they do not emerge from the water, a resort employee reports that they all died.
Families with members who have specific physical or mental diseases are as unwitting test subjects used in clinical trials for new medical drugs at the resort, which is a research front. The researchers have completed lifetime trials of the drugs within a day after arriving on the beach because guests’ lives are naturally accelerated. With the hope that the medicine they develop will save millions of lives, the researchers lure a new group to the beach but are interrupted by Trent and Maddox, who have survived the underwater swim. Due to the notebook, the siblings track down several missing guests at the resort and alert the police.
