Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize social media’s impact on beauty standards, potentially influencing the plastic surgery industry.

Dr. Steven Williams, President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, anticipates that as AI becomes more adept at manipulating images and integrates with social media, it could shape the requests plastic surgeons receive, given its influence on patients’ self-perception.

Social media has already played a significant role in shaping beauty standards and expectations, and AI’s advancements may amplify these effects. Dr. Williams suggests that plastic surgeons might face challenges in adapting to evolving expectations of normalcy or achievable results as AI continues to influence perceptions of beauty.

While AI is a hot topic in discussions about the future of healthcare, a survey by online provider community Sermo reveals that most doctors are not yet utilizing AI. Approximately half of the surveyed health executives expressed interest in AI’s development, but only a quarter have implemented the technology.

The areas where AI is making strides include electronic health records management, medical imaging, and predictive analytics. Despite the current limited adoption, over 90% of executives believe AI will become integral to their operations in the next five years.

AI is also making inroads into veterans’ hospitals, where it is being tested for various applications. However, concerns have been raised by lawmakers about the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) ability to safeguard patient information.

Rep. Matt Rosendale and Ranking member Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick expressed worries about the VA’s struggles to comply with data privacy laws, citing seven breaches affecting over 4,000 veterans in the past two years. As the VA adopts AI for improving patient care, ensuring transparency and data security become critical issues.

The VA is contemplating notifying patients when AI is employed in their care and is piloting model cards to provide users with information about the AI’s training data, effectiveness, drawbacks, and optimal usage circumstances in a transparent manner.
