Azerbaijani President Meets U.S. President’s Special Representative on Climate in Munich

President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan met with U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry in Munich at Kerry’s request. Kerry congratulated President Aliyev on his victory in the presidential election and Azerbaijan’s hosting of COP29. President Aliyev expressed gratitude for the congratulations and recalled his previous meetings with Kerry.

President Aliyev emphasized Azerbaijan’s commitment to supporting international efforts in climate change, both through its participation in COP and its national measures in renewable energy and green transition.

Azerbaijan aims to foster global solidarity, especially between the Global North and South, and draws on its experience from its presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Regarding regional initiatives, President Aliyev highlighted projects related to the seabed of the Black Sea and the establishment of a renewable energy line on the Caspian seabed, noting collaboration with Central Asian countries.

Kerry emphasized the importance of climate finance and praised technological advancements in green transitions. He expressed hope that decisions made at COP29 in Baku would boost international efforts in addressing climate change.

President Aliyev invited Kerry to visit Azerbaijan for COP29, which Kerry accepted with pleasure. The meeting showcased Azerbaijan’s commitment to climate action and its engagement in global efforts to combat climate change.
