At an exclusive dinner hosted by the Gridiron Club and Foundation at the Grand Hyatt in Washington D.C., President Joe Biden took a lighthearted jab at himself and his political opponent, Donald Trump, suggesting one was too old and mentally unfit for the White House.

With a touch of humor, Biden told the audience, which comprised high-profile journalists, business leaders, and politicians from across the U.S., that “the other’s me.”

The Gridiron dinner, an annual tradition in Washington D.C., typically features both parties exchanging jokes and playful jabs at one another. While presidents don’t always attend every year, it’s customary for them to make at least one appearance during their time in office.

Trump attended in 2018, and Barack Obama participated in 2011, 2013, and 2015. Biden’s attendance at this weekend’s event marked his first appearance since assuming office in 2020.

Addressing ongoing criticisms about his fitness for the presidency, particularly in light of the upcoming 2024 election, Biden’s remarks were part of a series of playful jabs aimed at Trump, who is anticipated to be his opponent in a potential rematch of the 2020 election.

In jest, Biden humorously remarked, “Don’t tell him, he thinks he’s running against Barack Obama, that’s what he said,” during the dinner. This playful banter isn’t new for Biden, who has previously commented on his opponent’s mental acuity.

He recently quipped about Trump’s memory lapses, humorously suggesting, “He’s about as old as I am, but he can’t remember his wife’s name.”

Transitioning from light-hearted banter to more serious topics, Biden highlighted the challenges facing democracy and freedom globally, citing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions in Europe and criticizing his predecessor’s approach to diplomacy.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, introducing the Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S. and the Estonian Prime Minister during the event.

Biden’s appearance at the Gridiron dinner offered a blend of humor and solemn reflection, showcasing his ability to engage with diverse audiences while addressing critical issues facing the nation and the world.
