During the Shamrock Ceremony at the White House, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar moved President Joe Biden to tears as he paid tribute to the late Bo Biden, referencing his courage and service as a decorated war hero.

Bo Biden, an Irish American, had spoken passionately about the promises leaders should make, emphasizing the importance of ensuring opportunities for children to succeed and commitments to each other for a better future.

Quoting Bo Biden’s poignant words, Varadkar highlighted the significance of these promises, particularly in the context of leadership responsibilities. Biden visibly welled up as Varadkar mentioned his son’s quotes, indicating the emotional resonance of the moment.

Expressing gratitude for Biden’s support regarding the war in Ukraine, Varadkar also addressed the conflict in Gaza, drawing parallels to former President John F. Kennedy‘s call for peace during his 1963 speech to the Irish parliament.

Referencing Kennedy’s plea to protect the vulnerable, Varadkar emphasized America’s historical role as a force for good in promoting liberty and democracy worldwide.

Highlighting the Irish people’s empathy for the Palestinian cause, Varadkar underscored the shared experience of displacement and dispossession, drawing a parallel between Ireland’s history and the struggles faced by Palestinians.

He urged for urgent humanitarian action in Gaza, stressing the necessity for both sides to cease hostilities and prioritize the well-being of civilians.

Calling on Israel to reconsider its decision to authorize a land incursion into Rafah, Varadkar emphasized the importance of a two-state solution for lasting peace in the region.

He affirmed Ireland’s readiness to recognize a Palestinian state in alignment with like-minded partners when conducive to peace efforts.

In his closing remarks, Varadkar acknowledged the historical significance of Israel’s journey as a nation-state, recognizing its resilience and cultural revival.

Through his heartfelt address, Varadkar reiterated Ireland’s commitment to promoting peace, advocating for humanitarian relief, and supporting efforts towards a sustainable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
