Former Sheriff’s Officer Enters Essex Race

Gary Nash, a retired Essex County Sheriff’s Department captain, has declared his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for sheriff in the upcoming June 4 primary election. Nash aims to succeed Armando Fontoura, who is set to retire in January after serving nearly 34 years in the position.

In his announcement, Nash emphasized his commitment to maintaining the highest standards of law enforcement and ensuring the safety and security of Essex County’s communities.

He pledged to bring the same dedication and integrity he displayed throughout his career to the role of Sheriff, vowing to work tirelessly to serve and protect the county’s residents.

Nash’s candidacy sets up a contest against Amiri Jones, the current undersheriff and a 12-year Essex Sheriff’s Department veteran. Jones has secured the backing of the Essex Democratic organization.
