Doom Petrol is a TV series developed by Jeremy Carver, and it is based on the DC Comics superhero team that goes by the same name. It was the first announced on 14 May 2018 as an intended spin-off to Titans Titans for video-on-demand service DC Universe after co-creator, and executive producer Geoff Johns unveiled that Titans’ fourth episode will be featured and it’s titled after the Doom Patrol on 10 February 2018. Even though the order and sharing characters and actors, Doom Patrol occupies a different continuity from Titans. In the first season, they had fifteen episodes that were developed, which premiered in 2019. Jeremy Carver wrote the pilot and served as an executive producer and Johns, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter. There were two production companies involved in the season, which were Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
After the first season, the second one was announced during the San Diego Comic-Con. It premiered on both DC Universe and WarnerMedia’s video-on-demand service HBO Max on 25 June 2020. The second season was supposed to have ten episodes bit due to the Covid-19, there were only nine episodes in the season. As for the plot, the story follows Doom Petrol who are the unlikely heroes team that got their power through tragic circumstances and are generally shunned by society. Most of the members of the group were treated by the Chief, who himself is a medical doctor that gave them shelter in his mansion to help protect them from the outside world. The names which they have now are derived from an earlier Doom Patrol team that was formed by Chief.
The first member of the group that was introduced was Jane, the dominant identity of a traumatized woman with a dissociative identity disorder. Rita Farr, who is struggling to prevent her body from turning to a gelatinous state. Larry Trainor has an entity of negative energy living inside of him, and lastly, Cliff Steele, whose brain was placed in a robot body because of a car crash. Cybernetically-enhanced superhero Vic Stone later joins the team. The first season showed that the Chief was captured by the evil Mr. Nobody, which sends the gange to rescue him. On their journey, they can find more and more secrets about themselves, and the Chief, whom they eventually learn, is responsible for the tragic events that gave them their powers. As for the second season, in that the team tries to find a way to prolong his life to continue caring for her if he dies before her, they would have to protect her.
As for the cast, it consists of Diane Guerrero as Jane: The dominant identity of Kay Challis, who is a young woman that developed 64 identities because of her childhood trauma during an experiment she was involuntarily subjected to. Each of the identity possesses powers. April Bowlby, as Rita Farr, who is a former Hollywood actress that was born in Gertrude Cramp; her cellular structure was altered into a gelatinous state after she was exposed to a toxic gas. Matt Bomer and Matthew Zuk, as Larry Trainor, a former United States Air Force pilot and within him is a negative energy entity. Brendan Fraser and Riley Shanahan as Cliff Steele is a cyborg and former NASCAR driver. His brain was transplanted into a robotic body after a car crash destroyed his own.
Timothy Dalton, as Niles Caulder, aka, the Chief. He is a medical doctor who is responsible for treating the members of the Doom Patrol and giving them shelter in his mansion. Joivan Wade as Victor “Vic” Stone, aka, Cyborg. He is a young, ambitious superhero who got cybernetic enhancements from his father Silas, after an accident that led to his mother’s death. Julie McNiven as Sheryl Trainor, Larry’s wife, and the mother of his children. Kyle Clements as John Bowers, Phil Morris as Silas Stone, Mark Sheppard as Willoughby Kipling, Devan Chandler Long as Flex Mentallo, Abigail Shapiro as Dorothy Spinner, and many more. The show’s reception was pretty good by both the critics and the fans. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds a 96% approval rating based on 51 reviews, which are insane. On the other hand, the second season has the same rating as the first one: a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 25 reviews with an average rating of 8.36/10.
With the second season-ending recently, the fans of the popular TV series want to know when they will be getting the third season of the show. This question was answered recently, as the show will be making a grand its return soon as it was announced that the series was renewed for a third season. But with this announcement, another one was made: the show will exclusively be available on HBO Max. During a FanDome panel, HBO Max head of original content Sarah Aubrey said Doom Patrol would be coming to HBO Max with a deep and passionate fan base. Because of them, it has risen the show top as one of the most-watched Max Originals on the streaming service. He also said that the series sits well in their portfolio, and they are glad that the show is greenlighted a third season, which will continue their different style of storytelling, which is liked by critics and fans alike.
Showrunner Jeremy Carver said in a statement that the cast, writers, and crew are thrilled and grateful for this opportunity, which is to return to the Doom Manor. They are incredibly thankful for their partners, Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, DC Universe, and HBO Max. It is excellent news for the fans, and HBO Max as the fans also got what they wanted and the streaming platform HBO Max which has gained one more excellent tv show.
