On February 21, 2024, an intriguing meme surfaced on X, showcasing a photo of a Casey’s General Store sign displaying gas prices at a strikingly low $1.19 per gallon. This meme, aimed at stirring memories of similar fuel prices under former President Donald Trump‘s tenure, carried the caption “March 25, 2020.

“Remember This In November,” referencing the November 2024 election, became a popular rallying cry as the meme spread rapidly across various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit, Truth Social, and X. Its nostalgic nod to lower gas prices captured the attention of audiences, fueling its widespread appeal.

This particular image had previously made its rounds on the internet, marked with a different date: March 30, 2020, right before the 2022 midterm elections. At that time, some voters anticipated a massive Republican victory, which did not materialize.

The location where the meme’s photo was taken remains unidentified, but the sign belongs to Casey’s, a chain with numerous outlets across several states. A clue in the picture suggests the proximity to U.S. Route 62.

According to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.com, the steep decline in gas prices during March and April 2020 can be attributed to a significant decrease in demand triggered by the global spread of COVID-19. This demand reduction was a direct result of widespread movement restrictions and the temporary shutdown of businesses to curb the virus’s spread.

De Haan emphasized that this phenomenon was solely a consequence of the pandemic’s impact, dismissing any implications that U.S. presidential policies were responsible for the lower gas prices during this period. GasBuddy.com recognized for its comprehensive analysis and data on fuel prices, has earned credibility from a broad spectrum of media outlets.

References from diverse news platforms, including Fox News, MSNBC, Breitbart, CNN, The Daily Caller, CBS News, RedState, ABC News, The Daily Wire, and HuffPost, have affirmed its reputation as a reliable and impartial source. This wide-ranging endorsement underscores GasBuddy.com’s role as a key informant in the discourse on fuel pricing, independent of political affiliations or agendas.
