Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, in her comments to Newsmax, clarified that Israel’s recent troop movement in southern Gaza should not be interpreted as a withdrawal but rather a strategic repositioning for the next phase in the conflict against Hamas.
According to Hassan-Nahoum, this maneuver is part of a larger effort to target Hamas’s remaining battalions, particularly those stationed in Rafah, signaling Israel’s determination to continue its military objectives.
This period has also been marked by Israel enhancing its defenses against potential retaliatory actions from Iran following airstrikes in Damascus. Besides these developments, Hassan-Nahoum highlighted the ongoing challenge posed by the capture of hostages by Hamas, underscoring the wide-ranging impact of these events on the Israeli populace.
The nation mourns the loss of soldiers and grapples with the widespread ramifications of these conflicts, which touch the lives of many within the small country.
In terms of diplomatic efforts, Hassan-Nahoum indicated that the outcome of peace talks in Cairo hinges on Hamas’s willingness to release hostages. She suggested that Hamas’s demands for a ceasefire might not be genuine, accusing the organization of playing a double game.
She further urged the United States to exert pressure on Hamas and its allies, including Qatar, to facilitate an agreement, positing that the leverage of U.S. interests in Qatar could be instrumental in achieving progress towards a ceasefire, contingent upon the release of the hostages.
