In a competitive race for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, former Army Colonel Laurie Buckhout is challenging incumbent Representative Don Davis, accusing him of being overly aligned with President Joe Biden and national Democratic policies.

Buckhout criticizes Davis, branding him a “career politician” and alleging he lacks real-world business experience and has not effectively addressed vital issues such as border security and the opioid crisis affecting their district.

Buckhout’s campaign, closely watched and categorized as a “Democrat Toss Up” by Cook Political Report, emphasizes her independence from party leaders. She contrasts herself with Davis, whom she claims is under the influence of prominent Democrats, including Hakeem Jeffries and President Biden himself.

Highlighting border security and the economy as top concerns for the district’s constituents, Buckhout shares alarming stories from residents about encounters with illegal activities and emphasizes the urgency of addressing these issues to restore safety and stimulate economic growth.

She leverages her extensive military background, including commanding an 800-person battalion in the initial attack on Iraq in 2003, to underline her leadership skills and commitment to serving the country.

Buckhout’s stance is further bolstered by her post-military work, where she contributed to national security through her strategic consulting group focused on electronic warfare and cyberspace operations. This work, particularly in countering improvised explosive devices, highlights her continued dedication to protecting American lives.

Supported by various national endorsements and outstanding backing from local law enforcement officials within the district, Buckhout positions herself as a candidate deeply connected to and supported by the community she aims to serve.

The recent redrawing of the district’s boundaries by the North Carolina General Assembly adds a layer of complexity to the race, potentially influencing the electoral outcome.

As the general election approaches, Buckhout’s campaign represents a remarkable challenge to the incumbent. Both candidates are vying to address the concerns of a district that spans diverse communities and faces unique challenges.

This race exemplifies the broader political dynamics in battleground states, where candidates must balance party loyalty and address the specific needs of their constituents.
