Conviction of British Veteran for Silent Prayer Near Abortion Clinic Raises Concerns Over Free Expression

Adam Smith-Connor, a British army veteran who served in Afghanistan, was convicted in the UK for silently praying near an abortion clinic. Smith-Connor, a father of two, had previously lost a son to abortion and decided to offer a private, silent prayer near the clinic.

His act, however, violated a local law that creates “buffer zones” around abortion clinics, which prohibit protesting, demonstrating, or praying in the vicinity. This law is aimed at preventing pro-life advocacy or expressions near such facilities.

The court found Smith-Connor guilty in November 2022 for breaking the buffer zone law. He was sentenced to a two-year conditional discharge and was ordered to pay a fine of £9,000 (~$11,700) in court fees.

Prosecutors argued that his silent prayer constituted a form of protest against abortion, even though he was not outwardly demonstrating or vocalizing his views. The case has stirred discussions about the extent to which private thoughts and beliefs can be regulated in public spaces.

Smith-Connor’s prayer took place in a legally defined buffer zone that restricts pro-life activities, including prayers or offering help to women considering abortions.

The organization ADF International, which advocates for religious freedoms, has expressed concerns over the use of such zones to suppress free expression, particularly for those with pro-life beliefs. The law in question aims to prevent any form of influence on individuals visiting abortion facilities.

When questioned by police, Smith-Connor was asked about the nature of his silent prayer, which led to his charge. The court ruled that his actions conveyed disapproval of abortion, leading to his conviction. Smith-Connor expressed disbelief over the verdict, stating that he was merely engaging in silent prayer and that he had not intended to protest or interfere with anyone’s actions.

After his conviction, Smith-Connor emphasized his commitment to defending the freedoms he once served to protect as a soldier. He expressed concern that the UK’s decision to prosecute individuals for “thought crimes” represents an erosion of fundamental liberties.

Smith-Connor, who now works as a healthcare professional and church volunteer, highlighted how troubling it is to see basic rights, like freedom of thought, increasingly restricted in the UK.
