Trump Administration Plans Major Deportation Push, Chicago Targeted as First City

President-elect Donald Trump’s administration is preparing to launch a major deportation initiative targeting illegal immigrants, with reports indicating Chicago will be the first city affected. Dubbed Operation Safeguard, the effort will involve Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents focusing on individuals with criminal or gang affiliations. The operation is planned to last one week, emphasizing Trump’s campaign pledge to implement one of the most extensive deportation programs in U.S. history.

Reports suggest that up to 200 ICE agents will be deployed to Chicago to start the operation, with agents being asked to volunteer for post-inauguration raids. Tom Homan, who is set to lead U.S. border enforcement, has confirmed plans for widespread raids, including targeting illegal immigrants at their workplaces. In a Fox News interview, Homan highlighted the scale of the nationwide crackdown, further underscoring the administration’s aggressive stance on immigration enforcement.

In addition to Chicago, other major cities with significant immigrant populations are expected to face similar crackdowns. The administration is prioritizing sanctuary cities, where local officials have historically limited cooperation with federal immigration authorities. These cities represent a focal point for Trump’s efforts to enforce federal immigration laws and strengthen the presence of ICE nationwide.

This policy represents a dramatic shift from the approach taken by President Joe Biden’s administration. Under Biden, ICE primarily focused on individuals who posed national security threats had severe criminal records, or had recently crossed the border. Trump’s strategy signifies a broader and more aggressive enforcement plan, targeting a wider range of undocumented immigrants.

As Trump prepares to take office, some officials have signaled cooperation with the incoming administration. New York Mayor Eric Adams, for instance, recently met with Trump and indicated a willingness to work together on these issues. With Trump’s inauguration set to occur Monday, his plans for immigration enforcement are emerging as a central theme of his presidency, setting the stage for sweeping changes in U.S. policy.
