Out of the 21 individuals on board the balloon, thirteen people survived, including the pilot. Authorities Pledge Support as Company Suspends Flights Amid Rising Ballooning Tragedies in Brazil

Governor Jorginho Mello called the event a tragedy and stated that the state would mobilize all necessary support for victims and their families. He emphasized the importance of providing immediate aid and investigating the cause. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also expressed sympathy and offered federal support to the affected families and local officials, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The hot-air balloon was operated by the company Sobrevoar, which stated it had adhered to all safety protocols and had no prior accidents. The balloon, with an expected flight duration of 45 minutes, reaching heights of 1,000 meters, was a part of a popular tourism activity in the region.

Following the tragedy, Sobrevoar announced it would suspend all operations indefinitely. The region, often dubbed the “Brazilian Cappadocia,” is renowned for its scenic balloon rides—an activity now shadowed by consecutive recent accidents, including another fatal incident the previous Sunday in São Paulo state.
