Vice President Kamala Harris has organized a gathering with nine Democratic governors at her residence in Washington, DC, to discuss the 2024 campaign, according to sources familiar with the event.

This meeting serves as a crucial assessment for President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign, which faces internal and external queries regarding its operations and outreach. The campaign is undergoing a reorganization as two top political aides leave the White House to focus more on the Wilmington headquarters.

Harris initiated the planning of this session weeks ago with the goal of coordinating messaging and obtaining a direct account of the governors’ perspectives from states identified as crucial battlegrounds for the upcoming November election.

While the primary focus is on 2024 and achieving unity, there is an acknowledgment of the underlying politics of 2028, as some invitees are anticipated to run against each other and Harris in the future.

The invited governors include Andy Beshear of Kentucky, Tim Walz of Minnesota, J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Tony Evers of Wisconsin, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Wes Moore of Maryland, and Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico.

Despite invitations being sent weeks ago, confirmation from several governors is still pending just days before the scheduled meeting.

While some governors expressed frustration at the additional trip to Washington amid their busy schedules, many view the meeting as an opportunity to provide constructive feedback to the Biden campaign.

A source working with one of the governors highlighted the chance to hear from key swing state governors about the campaign’s effectiveness and areas for improvement.

Democratic governors have been actively implementing popular and practical initiatives in their states, contributing to their popularity. The meeting with Vice President Harris is seen as an opportunity to discuss on-the-ground issues and emphasize the importance of delivering results and a clear message.

Biden campaign aides have experienced a boost in morale following the president’s decisive victory in the South Carolina primary. Ahead of Harris’ meeting with House Democrats, Representative Jim Clyburn of South Carolina pointed to the positive outcomes in his state, reprimanding reporters for what he perceived as undue negativity toward the president.
