Ashok Veeraraghavan, an Indian-origin computer engineer and professor, has been honored with the prestigious Edith and Peter O’Donnell Award in engineering, a significant academic accolade in Texas, USA.
Veeraraghavan, an alumnus of IIT-Madras, has been recognized for his groundbreaking work in imaging technology that aims to make the invisible visible.
The Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology (TAMEST), which bestows this award to outstanding researchers in the state, praised Veeraraghavan for his innovative imaging technology.
This technology, known as NeuWS (neural wavefront shaping), was developed in collaboration with researchers at the University of Maryland.
Veeraraghavan’s work focuses on creating imaging systems that utilize advanced multi-dimensional image sensors and machine learning algorithms.
These systems can effectively counter the effects of light-scattering, enabling them to see through media such as fog, smoke, rain, and even human tissue.
As a professor at Rice University’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Veeraraghavan continues to push the boundaries of imaging technology.
His educational background includes a BTech in electrical engineering from IIT Madras and master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park.
The Edith and Peter O’Donnell Award is an annual recognition given to outstanding researchers in Texas who are engaged in pioneering work in medicine, engineering, biological sciences, physical sciences, and technology innovation.
