During the interview, Abbott was asked if he wanted to be Trump’s running mate, to which he responded with a smile, “No.” He emphasized his love for being governor of Texas and expressed his belief that he could best aid Trump by continuing to serve in his current role.
Abbott’s statement comes after he appeared alongside Trump during a Fox News interview last week. When asked if Abbott would be on the list of possible running mates, Trump responded affirmatively, calling Abbott a “spectacular man” who has “done a great job.” However, Abbott reiterated that his focus remains on serving the people of Texas.
While Trump’s endorsement could have been seen as a significant boost to Abbott’s political standing, especially within the Republican Party, Abbott’s decision to decline the offer indicates that he is committed to his current role and believes he can have a greater impact as governor.
