Manchester Orchestra at Irving Plaza

by Chad

Atlanta rock outfit Manchester Orchestra played The Fillmore alongside The Features, Biffy Clyro and O’ Brother. This was my second time seeing Andy Hull and crew, the first was at Bowery Ballroom. Opening up with the heavy riff-inspired Pride, all I could see was a blue and purple spotlit Hull peeking out from the haze. Guitarist, Robert McDowell, and bassist, Jonathan Corley, looked like moving shadows while Chris Freeman, keyboardist, was his usually animated self.

Emotion filled songs like 100 Dollars and Shake it Out showcased the band’s diversity. The up-tempo lead track from 2009’s Mean Everything to Nothing had hands in the air and bodies moving while all of Irving Plaza shouted “Shake It Out!” with the lead singer. When you feel that a show is equal to a roller coaster ride – everyone feeling the dips and dives at once – it makes it truly enjoyable. The crowd was later treated to a new song called Schwing, due off their new LP sometime later this year. MO defined what they were all about as they played out their set with consistently heavy songs from Mean Everything to Nothing to the always powerful closer, Where Have You Been? The guys showed that they’re not about jumping up and down and wearing skinny jeans. It’s solidly structured music, good song writing and pure performance energy that make up Manchester Orchestra. The band stands mature beyond their years… I wonder if their fans are appreciative of that. I hope so!
