Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros Share Their Stage
by Kat
When enthusiastic frontman, Alex Ebert, explained that the show was a 50 / 50 effort between the band and the audience, he presented us with the amicable nature that sums up Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. Where moments of sharing a mutual appreciation during concerts are inconsistent, Sharpe & Company promise a sure thing! They encourage the literal boundaries between the standing area and the stage to disappear by having fans unite with band members, or rather, become a part of their family. Ebert surrounds himself in the crowd – stepping down to the floor to sing and dance, elbow to elbow with the fans – ruling the requirement to participate. The extroversion of Sharpe’s interactive spirit may at first turn off show-goers that look for a live act to visibly connect with itself – but soon enough, the engaging good nature replaces all reservations. That night, the free energy bounced right back onto the stage during “Home” when an anonymous guy jumped between the chemistry of Ebert and female vocalist, Jade Castrinos. And we caught it on video! His brief hop-around ignites a domino effect that ended in over fifty people swarming the width of the entire stage! Even Webster Hall, a major venue, LET it happen – given no choice but to submit to the warmth and welcome the Magnetic Zeros will bring anywhere! To cap the excitement of attendees still swallowing the performers on stage, Ebert instructed the venue to take a seat for the ease of “Brother,” which he solemnly sang from the middle of the pit. Whether you’re sitting on the beer-soaked floor with him – or peering from the mezzanine – you will be part of an honest harmony between ‘artist and listener’ that no other group can so hospitably devise.
