Stone Temple Pilots Revived!
by Chad

Fifteen years ago, my sister blasted Purple in her room, MTV News sampled “Lounge Fly” and we fought over who ruled alternative music – STP or Pearl Jam? I had a hard time deciding the best way to describe the show but honestly, these guys just killed it! Pure satisfaction met many years of anticipation, leaving me smiling non-stop. STP, now reformed to current rock standard, were dressed to the nines in vests and top hats – replacing grunge with gentlemanly and sleek. They played in front of a massive projection that appeared to simulate 3D with the look of a gradient array of light bulbs. The sounds – from the pops of Eric Kretz’s snare to Dean DeLeo’s guitar – bulldozed through the crowd while the animated Robert DeLeo weaved with precision across the stage, his fingers and mouth in sync to each note. Scott Weiland danced more like a Rolling Stone as he rocked out, windmilling his bullhorn howling, “I don’t care, yeah and I don’t care!” They played it up for the cameras – jamming alongside each other, flaunting old school stage presence – with attitude and charisma that dispels any myth of washed up 90’s rockers.
