Creation Records
Mike

While the “Polar Vortex” was bearing down on NYC, I was in search for a good movie on Netflix and came across “Upside Down: The Creation Records Story” in the recently added section. This awesome documentary is about the story of Creation Records. Prior to watching this film, I knew nothing about the label other than that they’ve been around since the 80’s and existed through the 90’s. What I learned was just how important the Creation Records label was to indie as Factory Records and 4AD is to rock history. And dare I say, that much more “real” rock and roll because of the party vibe the label projected and the out of control atmosphere they were known to create for those in the scene. Where Factory Records and 4AD specialized in Post-punk and New Wave, Creation specialized in Shoegaze and Britpop. The label put out some of the most important records of those genres, including The Jesus and Mary Chain’s Pyschocandy, My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, Slowdive’s Slovaki, Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, and Oasis (What’s the story) Morning Glory?
Here are some of my favorite tracks from the Creation Records roster.
