During his lifetime, he held 57 patents, the majority of which were related to locomotives and railways.
The invention titled “Improvement in Lubricators for Steam Engines” was his first patent.
McCoy also developed inventions such as ironing boards and lawn sprinklers.
In 1920, he founded the Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company. They produced lubrication devices.
People used “the real McCoy” to refer to the quality products.
In 2001, Elijah McCoy was inducted into Akron, Ohio’s National Inventors Hall
of Fame.
