Sometimes, the only thing that holds us back emotionally in life is not being able to get closure from relationships and the truth that has been kept hidden under the silhouette of deception. Little Big Women is one such story. Directed by Joseph Chen-Chieh HSU, ‘Little Big Women’ is a story of womanhood and the strengths each woman is born with. Starring Shu Fang CHEN, Vivian HSU, Ying-Xuan HSIEH, Ke-Fang SUN, the movie is an emotional mourning diary, said from the perspective of a mother and her daughters, after they suffer the loss of their father and witness the stories of his life, that act as a closure to them. The trailer of the upcoming film was dropped on YouTube and seemed promising.

The trailer begins with the women being seated together with the body of the deceased in the center. It is Shoying’s 70th birthday, and life presents her the most hurtful thing she could have ever imagined-the body of her deceased husband Bochang, who continued to stay away from his family all his life. Shoying’s granddaughter, being unaware of the existence of her grandfather, asks about his identity. To which she points at her daughter and refers to him to be ‘her dad.’ The granddaughter feels gloomy at this discovery, for this is the first, and the last time she could ever come face to face with her grandfather.

However, Shoying decides to organize a prayer meet for her husband and arrange for a funeral for restricts her daughter to kneel before him because he wasn’t the one who raised them. What breaks the women even more is the fact that Bochang used to stay with another woman named Tsai, in Taipei. The mere thought of her husband being in love with some other woman who was present with her during his last breath feels like a glass that has ripped off her flesh.

But Shoying’s daughters have totally different opinions on this. Although it hurts that their father chose a different life, far away from them, they have no grudges for Tsai, for she loved their father. The women then try to mend the fractured relationships that they share with each other. They begin to understand that sometimes, humans opt for things they know are eventually going to hurt them. But love makes them helpless and hopeful-both on extreme levels, and they begin to lose themselves in the process.

We witness the struggles and breakdown of women, who have grown without the roof and support of the patriarch over them. How Shoying, as a single mother, raised her daughters and how the daughters aimed perfection and victory so that their father could visit them more often, stay and be a part of their celebration. This shows how they longed for the presence of their fathers in life, which was never written in their fate.
