Cut Copy

Zonoscope

When I was first introduced to Cut Copy, they were described to me as “New Order for a new generation.” Similar to the influential band, Cut Copy return – three years since In Ghost Colours – to claim the electronic dance throne and rock our bodies again with Zonoscope. The electrifying opener ‘Need You Know’ targets the band’s new direction – aiming for a more transitionally rhythmic sound, blurring the boundaries between electro pop and trance. Yet, the chorus holds on to the pop sensibility that first put them on the map. It’s the best start to an album since last year’s “Echoes” by The Klaxons! As the album works on, the emphasis is on the music as the band uses their strengths to the tenth power. Dan Whiteford’s vocals keep up, animated and emotionally driven. Over a sinister, repetitive beat, “You got to live, you got to die, so what’s the purpose of you and I, you want some passion, you can receive, and it ain’t no question, in this I believe…” – ‘Sun God’ gives you the feeling that there is no better place than in that incredible moment. Exactly what all great dance records should do!
