During a St Patrick’s Day reception at the White House, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar made a heartfelt plea for a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need for the violence to end.
Hosted by US President Joe Biden, the event underscored the deep-rooted connections between the United States and Ireland, with a significant portion of Americans tracing their ancestry back to Ireland.
Varadkar stressed the dire situation in Gaza, highlighting the urgent necessities of food, medicine, and shelter for its people, but above all, the imperative for the bombings to cease.
He spoke of the Palestinian people’s aspirations for a homeland and a recognized state, affirming their equal claim to self-determination alongside Israel.
Having been one of Europe’s most vocal critics of Israel’s actions in Gaza, Varadkar condemned the campaign initiated by Hamas, which led to significant casualties on both sides, with a disproportionate number of civilian deaths in Gaza, particularly among women and children.
Drawing parallels between Ireland’s own history of struggle against colonial rule and the plight of the Palestinians, Varadkar emphasized the shared experiences of displacement, dispossession, and the denial of national identity.
Expressing faith in America’s role as a force for good in the world, Varadkar commended US efforts to broker a humanitarian ceasefire and pave the way for lasting peace in the region.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s intent to enter Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza, despite international calls to halt such actions to protect civilians.
The United States demanded a clear plan to safeguard civilians, while Varadkar urged Israel to abandon its plans for the incursion.
