The soundtrack of this movie consists of 14 tracks written by Lerner and Loewe. This album ranked 6th on the Kent Music Report of Australia. The major tracks of this album include songs that were originally sung for the 1951 Broadway Musical namely They Call The Wind Maria and Wand’rin’ Star. The American country rock band named Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performed and recorded the song Hand Me Down That Can O’ Beans.

A major part of this film is shot in Oregon, Paramount Studios as well as California. Some of the filming locations of this musical include the locations in Southern California, namely The Big Bear Lake and San Bernandino National Forest. Apart from Southern California, the filming locations of Oregon include The Baker City as well as the East Eagle Creek. Some of the scenes were also filmed at the Holcomb Valley, near the Big Bear Lake.

This film grossed over 31.6 million upon its release. The IMBD rating for this movie is 6.6/10, whereas Rotten Tomatoes and Meta Critic rated this musical 20% and 50% on their websites. Roger Ebert, in his review, rates this movie two out of 5 stars. He writes, ” This movie doesn’t inspire a review. It doesn’t inspire a putdown. It just lies there in my mind like a big heavy lump. Apart from critics’ reviews, this movie has received mixed reviews from the audience till now.

Apart from receiving mixed reviews, this movie remains iconic due to the number of nominations as well as the awards it received. It was nominated for Best Motion Picture in the musical category of the Golden Globes Awards. In addition to that, this musical is an Oscar nominee in the category of Best Music/ Score of a Musical Picture. Furthermore, Paint Your Wagon is a winner of the Best Foreign Performer award by Fotogramas De Platas (1971). Lee Marvin is the recipient of this award.
