South Asian Culture and Heritage

The first episode of Ms. Marvel reflects her parents’ conservative and regressive attitude. She’s not allowed to go to the Avengers Convention despite several efforts. Kamala’s brother Aamir uses his privilege as the elder son to help her out. We also witnessed her mother carrying a box full of traditional jewelry that belonged to her grandmother, including a mysterious bangle. Kamala questions her mother about the mysterious bangle, but she refuses to tell her anything and orders Aamir to hide the bangle in the attic. Additionally, this episode also shows the stereotypes associated with the South Asian culture and heritage when Kamala is told by her parents to dress up in traditional clothes as a “green hulk.” She eventually embraces her culture and identity by wearing the traditional bangle at the Avengers Convention.

Kamala becomes Ms. Marvel

Kamala’s rivalry with her bully Zoe is displayed throughout episode 1 when Zoe copies her costume. After several efforts, Kamala manages to make it to the Avengers Convention despite the rejection from her parents. She’s seen wearing the traditional bangle that eventually unlocks and teleports her to another dimension, where she witnesses flashes of people from unearthly realms.
