Persuasion Review

“Persuasion” was the last novel published before its author Jane Austen’s death. Though Jane Austen wrote her novels in the 18th century, the level of relatability and common interests shocked everyone. It’s like Austen had already seen the future and wrote accordingly. Hollywood loves to adapt Jane Austen’s novels into movies and shows. The adaptations of “Emma” and “Pride and Prejudice” was remarkable. Hollywood has tried to adapt one of Austen’s famous novels, “Persuasion.” It was released on 15th July 2022 on Netflix. In this article, there will be the movie “Persuasion” review and a discussion of the plot. Without waiting further, let’s get started.

Persuasion Movie Plot

Anne Elliott, played by Dakota Johnson, is a very calm and composite lady. In her family, there is her father, Sir Walter Elliott, and her sister, Mary Elliott. Her mother left for her heavenly journey when Anne was so young. Anne’s family is not responsible for spending and making a budget. Sometimes, she feels like an outsider in her own family because she is very responsible, unlike them. Anne got engaged to Fredrick Went worth played by Cosmo Jarvis. Despite her love for him, she broke off the engagement with Frederick. Lady Russell, who took Anne’s mother’s place after she was gone, persuades Anne to do so. Lady Russell thinks that Frederick Wentworth is not very wealthy due to him being a lower class. Anne can’t disobey Lady Russell and decides to break off the marriage.

Frederick Wentworth was devastated and heartbroken when he came to know about it. Just like Anne, Frederick loved his partner too. He felt very disrespected and decided to make a name for himself in the navy. Later, he becomes the captain and comes back to the town. Though heartbroken, he can still not take his eyes off Anne. It is true love that never dies. After breaking off her marriage with Frederick, Anne fulfills her responsibility by paying the family’s financial debts. Now, she is in her late twenties and is not married. She scares that she will die as a spinster. She has persuaded her heart that she will never find true love, but destiny always takes over in the end.

Persuasion Movie Review

Cannie Cracknell, the director of the movie “Persuasion,” has, for some reason, modernized the film. It is based on 18th-century drama, so it should be related to that time and period. However, she has made the best decision in casting Dakota Johnson as Anne Elliott, as she has done justice to her character. Whenever someone reads a book, they make an image of the character in their head and live by it forever. Dakota has presented Anne in a way that everyone has created in their mind. Cosmo Jarvis, too did justice to the role of Frederick Wentworth. He shows the progress of Frederick from being a poor man to the respected captain of the navy in a most presentable way. Director has made viewers wait for almost 100 minutes to see Anne and Frederick’s expression of love for each other.

The movie is streaming on Netflix. If you want to watch something wholesome and feel good, this movie is for you. That’s it for the review of the movie Persuasion.
