Winkler worked as an actor at Yale, frequently rehearsing for one play during the day and performing in some other over the evening. In 1973 he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a profession in television. He was mostly hired as Valerie Harper’s partner on the Mary Tyler Moore TV series for two weeks. A larger role, mostly in the Bob Newhart Program, followed this.
After staying in Los Angeles for a month, Winkler decided to return to New York because he began to miss it. He attended another audition for the role of a biker in the upcoming TV show Happy Days with producer Garry Marshall before gathering his belongings. Marshall had imagined this enormous, powerful Italian man playing the role, but Winkler’s performance stopped his time-consuming search.
“Happy Days” and Subsequent Projects:
On January 15, 1974, Winkler had his television debut on Happy Days as Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli. Winkler started to draw notice despite having just a couple of lines and a small role in the story.
