RuPaul fills multiple roles, including the show’s host, mentor, and head judge. Then, first introduced in Season 1, RuPaul’s Drag Racing U.K. girl group challenge was an unexpected jolt. The Frock Destroyers’ “Break Up (Bye Bye)” performance was a phenomenal hit. – It seemed impossible for her to declare a single winner among the three members, so for the first time in drag racing history, her three queens won in one performance. Baga Chips, Blue Hydrangea, and Divina de Her Campo.

RuPaul’s Drag Race (U.K.) Season 4 Episode 7 Preview

The next girl group challenge takes place in the fifth episode of the U.K. Season 2. This was the first shot after production was forced to pause due to COVID-19. Everyone was eager to get back on track and a little nervous (this is RuPaul’s “fucking H&M” rant episode). Yes, Tice and Bimini probably deserved to win the most, but when everyone was so good, why didn’t Lawrence Chaney and A Hoola win too? So, the RuPeter badge inflation continued, and Four queens collectively got one of hers.

Drag Race

This continued into Season 3 in the U.K., even though “B.D.E.” was well below the high standards set in the previous two seasons. This season, the RuPeter badge arms race is at its peak, with six possible wins thanks to an oversized girl group. And, spoiler alert, six of her badges will be awarded this week. Exaggerated?Definitely! Are the achievements worth the windfall of the badge? Not really! But that’s the reality of the Drag Race U.K. Girl Groups Challenge.

In many ways, British drag racing or something like that has long been awaited. In Britain, especially in working-class cultures, there is a rich history of drag as a mainstream pastime, and the use of rough humor is an integral part of our national identity (even the softest show, Bake Off, has become famous for its double streak of Entender), so it should work. On the other hand, one of the defining characteristics of the original Drag Race is its amazing seriousness. This seems at odds with most British drag racing I’ve seen. British drag is more original, experimental, and open to idiosyncrasies. Like many others, I was worried that Drag Race would lose these qualities in translation.
