Michael Caine Announces His Retirement from Acting Once Again. The iconic star of “The Dark Knight,” Michael Caine, now 90 years old, made it official on BBC Radio 4’s Today show that he is retiring from acting after the release of his latest film, “The Great Escaper.”

Caine stated, “I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now. I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and received incredible reviews… What am I going to do that will surpass this?”

He also cited the diminished opportunities for new roles due to his age, explaining, “The only parts I’m likely to get now are 90-year-old men, or maybe 85. They’re not going to be the lead. You don’t have leading men at 90; you’re going to have young, handsome boys and girls. So I thought I might as well retire on a high note.”

Before embarking on his latest project, inspired by the true events of a World War II veteran, Caine had turned down three other roles. Leading up to the film’s release on October 6, he hinted that he wouldn’t be returning to the big screen, saying, “I sort of am retired now. I am 90 now, and I can’t walk properly and all that.”

This isn’t the first time Caine has contemplated retirement; he previously mentioned it in 2021 after starring in “Best Sellers.” He explained, “I haven’t worked for two years, and I have a spine problem that affects my legs. So, I can’t walk very well. There aren’t exactly scripts pouring out for an 88-year-old leading man,” during an interview on BBC Radio’s Kermode show.

Michael Caine’s illustrious acting career dates back to the 1950s when he made his film debut in “A Hill in Korea.” He earned six Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor, notably for “Hannah and Her Sisters” and “The Cider House Rules.”

Caine also graced the screen in blockbuster hits such as “Miss Congeniality,” “Interstellar,” and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

The English actor seems to be enjoying his well-deserved retirement, as he was spotted vacationing in Barbados with his wife, Shakira Caine, earlier this year.
