In an official statement to PEOPLE on Thursday, Witherspoon’s representative categorically dismissed the speculation, labeling it as “completely fabricated and not true.” As of the time of the inquiry, there has been no response from Costner’s representative to EW’s request for comment.
This denial follows a pattern, as just over six months ago, Witherspoon found herself in the midst of similar unfounded dating rumors, this time involving NFL star Tom Brady. Representatives for both Witherspoon and Brady clarified in April, through statements to PEOPLE, that the two were not romantically involved and had never even met.

Witherspoon and her ex-husband Jim Toth officially announced their separation in March after a 12-year marriage, finalizing their divorce settlement in August. The couple shared the news of their split on social media just days before their anniversary, expressing their commitment to moving forward with “deep love, kindness, and mutual respect.” Their primary focus during this challenging time is their son and the well-being of their entire family.
On the other hand, Costner and his ex-wife Christine Baumgartner concluded their acrimonious divorce proceedings in September after months of legal disputes over child support and Baumgartner’s relocation from the family’s Santa Barbara residence. Baumgartner initiated the divorce filing in May, marking the end of their 18-year marriage.
During this challenging period, a representative for Costner conveyed, “It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have transpired which have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a dissolution of marriage action.” The representative urged the public to respect the privacy of Costner, Christine, and their children as they navigate through this difficult chapter in their lives.
