Attack on Titan Season 4

Previously on Attack on Titan Season 4, A young Reiner is shown in his bed with his mom tucking him in, explaining how both of them were Eldians, and that is why his father left the family. His mother cries how she regrets being an Eldian and wishes that she and her son should have been born Marleyans. Driven by his desire to be the greatest son and bring down the Marleyan Judgment on the demons of Paradis Island, Reiner enrolls to be an honorary Marleyan. To his dismay, he is the least likely to get picked for getting a titan. The realization is brought about by Porco, which causes an argument between the two, broken by Marcel.

Previously on Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 3 (E62)

“The Door of Hope” is drawn on Reiner’s past and his struggle to reach where he is right now. We see an invasion in action where the new Warriors are fighting with their newly acquired strengths, and we are introduced to each Titan and the one assigned to it. Even after being the weakest among the warrior candidates, Reiner inherits the Armored Titan, to which Porco is vexed as he is left out.

Four of the Warriors: Reiner, Annie, Bertholdt, and Marcel, are shipped off to Paradis Island to find and bring back the Founding Titan. But on their journey, Reiner faces reality when Marcel explains how he orchestrated Reiner to get the Armored Titan to keep his brother, Porco, away from this life. Soon after, a titan attacks the group, during which Marcel sacrifices himself for Reiner. With his life-changing twice over the course of time, Reiner has a rejuvenated desire to capture the Founding Titan.  Marcel’s death acts as the catalyst to reunite Reiner, Bertholdt, and Annie in their quest, where we first see these three in action in Season 1.

Reiner’s Marleyan Father

As one remembers in the first scene, how being Eldians was the reason why Reiner’s father left the family. Reiner has finally grown older and is part of the Warriors, making him and his mother honorary Marleyans. When Reiner sees his dad, he is happy that his family can finally get back together. When he goes and meets him, he is left with another startling information that his father has another family and refuses to come back no matter what. This episode gives the audience a new perspective of Reiner and helps us empathize over all his struggles over the years and how he is not much different from Eren, Mikasa, or Levi. At present, Reiner is about to commit suicide but resides after seeing Falco.

This brings us, the audience, a realization that the man was Eren Jaegar all along.
