On Friday, Amazon Prime Video made it official that Drishyam 2, the sequel to the 2013 Thriller/Drama Malayalam movie Drishyam: would be available through their platform. Even though fans are not happy about not being able to see the sequel to their favorite film in Big Screens, they are eager to see how well the movie moves forward from where the first one ended. The sequel to the movie Drishyam was announced during the lockdown period in the pandemic. This movie’s shooting took place during the lockdown period while following the COVID-19 protocol.
Drishyam: The Story Till Now
Georgekutty (Played by Mohanlal) lived happily with his wife Rani (Meena) and his two kids Anju and Anu. Played by Ansiba and Esther Anil, respectively. Everything was going fine until an unexpected event occurred. An uninvited person, Varun (Roshan Basheer), tries to harm Anju. But he was murdered by Rani and Anju accidentally. Now Georgekutty has to do what it takes to prevent his family from getting arrested by law and order for the murder.
The movie moves forward on how Georgekutty tries to destroy the proofs and how he tries to manipulate the police by creating fake instances and thus misleading the investigation. The movie was brilliantly acclaimed by both the critics and audiences.
This movie had influenced other Indian film industries, and thus, it was remade into many other Indian languages. What’s greater is that this 2013 Malayalam movie even influenced the Chinese Film Industry, letting them remake this Malayalam movie! Since the prequel had already concluded in the first part, everyone was surprised to hear when the sequel was announced. This is the reason why fans are excited to see what the sequel has to offer.
Drishyam 2: The Controversy
Although fans are interested in the sequel to this superhit movie, there are some controversies also. Liberty Basheer, who is the president of Kerala Film Exhibitors Federations, talked against producer Antony Perumbavoor to release the movie on the OTT platform as Drishyam could be a huge crowd grabber since the Kerala government has finally allowed opening theaters in Kerala.
In defense of this, Director Jeethu Joseph said that the production house Aashirvad Cinemas had sold the movie rights in October. This was because, at this time, there wasn’t any clarity regarding the reopening of theaters in Kerala. Producer Antony Perumbavoor has a big-budget movie, Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, to be released. The crew finally decided to let Drishyam 2 be released on the OTT platform.

When are Georgekutty and Family coming back?
As of now, we are still don’t know when the film will be releasing. Director Jeethu Joseph has mentioned that the movie is currently in the post-production phase. After that, it will be handed over to Amazon Prime Video by the end of January. Thereafter Amazon Prime Video will decide when to release the movie. We could still expect Drishyam 2 to be released by the end of the first quarter of 2021.
As for the cast members, the teaser of Drishyam two released by Amazon Prime Video on 1st January gives us a glimpse of this upcoming movie’s cast members. We could see Asha Sharath (who played the role of IG Geetha Prabhakar), Siddique (Prabhakar), Meena, and Esther. Surprisingly, we could also see Murali Gopi, who was not present in the prequel. This gives us a hint that there will be new characters who may influence the storyline. The trailer ends by showing Mohanlal and slowly zooming into his eyes.
