Amazon Prime’s Drishyam 2: Trailer, Plot and Preview

A sequel to the 2013 superhit film starring Mohanlal will be streaming on Amazon Prime Video this year. Mohanlal, a prominent actor of the Malayalam Film Industry is all set to reprise his role of George Kutty in his upcoming film ‘Drishyam 2.’ The first part of the film came out in the year 2013 and instantly became a hit. The original film has witnessed adaptations in several languages, one of them being a Hindi remake that came out in 2015, starring Ajay Devgan, Shriya Saran, and Tabu in lead roles. The Hindi remake however proved to be the highest grosser among all and received immense appreciation for being true to its story and portrayal.

Set in Thodupuzha, Kerala, the film revolves around the four members of the Kutty family and the circumstances they need to overcome in order to protect each other. George Kutty is the head of the family who stays with his wife Rani and two daughters Anju and Anu. Anju is the adopted daughter but the couple loves her as their own. The family of four enjoy each other’s company and are happy in their little world, but they’re unaware of the series of tragedies that are about to turn their life upside down.

One day, Varun Prabhakar, Anju’s batchmate tries to physically abuse her by showing her a video that he secretly took on a school camp while she was changing clothes. Varun is the only child of Police Inspector General Geetha Prabhakar. Seeing the video, Anju shatters, but her mother Rani comes to her rescue. The family is soon under the lens of suspicion when George tries to drown Varun’s car as a part of his plan but is seen by Sahadevan, a corrupt constable, who has a grudge against George for ages. Then begins a series of investigations and planning, both side by side. Drishyam is a film that is one of kind. It keeps you on the edges of your seats because you’re unable to predict what’s supposed to happen next.

The cast of the film

Written and directed by Jeetu Joseph, the 2013 crime thriller film however isn’t totally original. The story is somewhat loosely based on the 2005 book ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’, written by Keigo Higashino. By picking up the main plot from the book, Jeeti Joseph managed to give the story a touch of individuality and originality by setting it in an Indian village and making some variations and changes to suit his sense of creativity. The rights of the 2005 book were however brought by the Hindi filmmaker Ekta Kapoor and she raised a legal issue regarding the same, but Jeetu’s version of the story seems too original to be put down and hence the legal team of the filmmaker couldn’t do anything.

But there’s good news for people who liked Drishyam. The team is returning with a sequel of the film that will premiere on the online streaming platform Amazon Prime Video. A teaser video of the film was dropped on YouTube last week and is likely to pick up its plot from the same place the initial film ended with. For the ones who haven’t watched part one of the film, make sure you do watch it before the second part comes out.

The sequel is however in the post-production phase and will be handed over to the streaming platform by the end of January. The decision of the official release date will be decided by Amazon Prime Video. So it seems we have got to wait a little more to witness one of the most anticipated films of the year. The film will star Mohanlal, Esther Anil, Meena, Ansiba, and Asha Sharath who will reprise their respective roles in the upcoming sequel.
