100 days have passed since a powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked western Nepal on November 3, 2023. UNICEF remains steadfast in its appeal for ongoing support for 68,000 children and their families residing in the affected regions. The organization is urging for $14.7 million in funding to aid in the reconstruction efforts and restoration of livelihoods for these affected children.
The earthquake, centered in the Jajarkot District of Karnali Province, resulted in the tragic loss of 154 lives and left 366 individuals injured. Of the deceased, a staggering 81 were children.
The devastation extended to homes, schools, health facilities, and water infrastructure, disrupting essential services crucial for the well-being of children. Despite the passage of time, approximately 200,000 individuals, including 68,000 children, remain in dire need of humanitarian assistance to rebuild their shattered lives.
As three months have elapsed since the earthquake, children in the affected areas are still grappling with the aftermath. The trauma of losing loved ones persists, while the loss of possessions, homes, and educational institutions continues to jeopardize their development.
Alice Akunga, UNICEF Representative to Nepal, emphasized the urgent need for sustained support, stating, “Even as temperatures rise, the needs are still high as children require nutritious food, clean water, education, and shelter.”
She highlighted the importance of restoring a sense of normalcy by prioritizing education, enabling children to reconnect with friends, learn, and heal.
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, UNICEF swiftly mobilized alongside the government and other partners to deliver life-saving aid to affected children and their families. This assistance included essential supplies such as tarpaulins, blankets, medical tents, recreational and educational materials, and hygiene kits.
The earthquake wreaked havoc on 898 school buildings, impacting the education of approximately 134,000 school-aged children. To address this challenge, UNICEF established 223 temporary learning centers, enabling over 17,000 children to resume their studies.
Efforts are underway to set up transitional learning centers capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions until permanent school structures can be repaired.
Furthermore, UNICEF collaborated with local authorities and partners to repair 565 damaged toilets and construct 251 temporary facilities. Support was also extended to the government’s vaccination campaign, aiming to protect children from deadly diseases like measles, rubella, and typhoid.
Despite these commendable efforts, significant gaps in funding persist, with only 7% of UNICEF’s $15.7 million appeal secured thus far. UNICEF stresses the urgency of additional funding, with a particular emphasis on the need for $14.7 million to sustain life-saving interventions for children in crisis.
Expressing gratitude to donors and supporters for their contributions, Akunga reiterated the importance of continued efforts to rebuild lives and instill hope in the hearts of children. UNICEF reaffirms its commitment to collaborating with the Government of Nepal, partners, and donors to meet the pressing needs of vulnerable children and youth.
Urging continued investment, UNICEF seeks to ensure the provision of vital supplies and services necessary for children to not only survive but also thrive amidst adversity.
