Republican candidate Michael Markey, who is challenging Democratic Rep. Hillary Scholten in Michigan, is inviting President Joe Biden to visit West Michigan and campaign alongside Scholten, citing her strong alignment with Biden’s policies.

Scholten, a first-term congresswoman, has been voting with Biden over 96% of the time. Markey’s suggestion comes as Republicans aim to maintain control of the U.S. House in the upcoming general election.

The recent special election in New York, which resulted in a win for Democrat Tom Suozzi, has narrowed the GOP’s majority in the chamber to just 219-212.

“I encourage President Biden to come tour Michigan’s 3rd District and see his policies in action here in West Michigan,” Markey stated to Newsmax on Thursday. He believes that a visit from Biden would showcase Scholten as one of the president’s strongest allies in Congress.

Markey’s invitation coincides with recent findings by special prosecutor Robert Hur, who reported last week that Biden had “willfully” retained and disclosed highly classified materials as a private citizen.

However, Hur stated that he would not prosecute Biden due to the likelihood of jurors viewing him as a sympathetic, well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory.

According to Markey, a visit from Biden would provide an opportunity for Scholten and the president to highlight what they consider to be successes in the district.

However, Markey criticized the Biden administration’s handling of issues such as inflation, border security, and crime rates, referring to them as “reckless policies” that warrant an explanation to West Michigan families.

Newsmax contacted Scholten’s office for comment regarding Markey’s suggestion, but there has been no response yet.
