Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has announced the United States’ ambitious goal to become a major manufacturer of leading-edge logic chips by the end of the decade.

Raimondo stated that the US aims to produce approximately 20% of the world’s leading-edge logic chips by 2030, a significant increase from the current production of zero percent.

This move is part of a broader strategy to bolster the US semiconductor industry and enhance its competitiveness in key technologies like machine learning, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing.

Raimondo emphasized the importance of leading-edge memory in AI systems and highlighted the objective to establish cost-competitive leading-edge memory manufacturing at scale in the US.

This effort aligns with the broader goal of reshoring semiconductor production and securing the critical supply chain for advanced chips.

Furthermore, Raimondo expressed confidence in the US’s ability to develop a comprehensive silicon supply chain, encompassing all aspects of chip production from polysilicon to wafer manufacturing, fabrication, and advanced packaging.

This holistic approach aims to enhance the US’s self-sufficiency in semiconductor manufacturing and reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers.

The announcement underscores the US government’s commitment to revitalizing the domestic semiconductor industry and ensuring its leadership in critical technologies.

By investing in leading-edge chip manufacturing and expanding the silicon supply chain, the US aims to strengthen its technological capabilities and global competitiveness in the semiconductor market.
