U.S. Sen. Katie Britt defended her recent response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union (SOTU) speech, emphasizing her focus on Biden’s immigration and border policies.

During her SOTU response, delivered from her home in Montgomery, Britt shared a story about a woman she met at the U.S. southern border who had been a victim of human trafficking and sexual assault since the age of 12. Journalists noted that the events in the story occurred over 20 years ago in Mexico, predating Biden’s presidency.

In an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” Britt clarified that she did not intend to suggest the events happened while Biden was in office. She emphasized that the woman, Karla Jacinta Romero, has become a victims’ rights advocate, and Britt hoped the story would bring attention to border issues.

Despite this clarification, Britt maintained her criticism of Biden, claiming his policies have contributed to an increase in human trafficking at the border. She accused the media of neglecting the issue.

Britt highlighted that she specifically mentioned Biden’s actions during his first 100 days in office, suggesting that these policies act as a magnet for more people to come to the U.S. She emphasized her commitment to seeking the “real, unvarnished truth” about the situation at the southern border, having visited it three times in her first 100 days in office.

While Britt’s response to the SOTU received criticism for her delivery and tone, former President Donald Trump praised her on his social media platform, Truth Social, describing her as “compassionate and caring.”

Britt, who assumed office in 2022 following Richard Shelby’s retirement, had previously served as Shelby’s chief of staff. Despite criticism, Britt remains steadfast in her critique of Biden’s border policies, aligning herself with Trump’s views on the matter.
