Britain Continues Selling Old Military Equipment – Should Consider Sending to Ukraine

The recent testimonies from a female soldier fighting on the frontlines against Russia in Donbas paint a stark picture of the dire situation facing the Ukrainian armed forces. Two years into Russia’s full-scale invasion, the need for urgent support from allies like the UK has never been more critical.

The UK has a significant arsenal of military aid within its resources that could potentially turn the tide in Ukraine’s favor. Parliamentary disclosures have revealed that the Ministry of Defence has sold over 1,000 unwanted military vehicles since the invasion began.

These include essential assets such as armored personnel carriers, reconnaissance vehicles, support vehicles, and aircraft, all of which could have been deployed to support Ukrainian forces on the frontline.

Labour MP Clive Lewis has called on the Government to send retired equipment to Ukraine, highlighting the urgent need for increased aid to enable Ukrainians to reclaim their country from Russian aggression. This sentiment is echoed by the Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine and other advocacy groups.

Despite previous motions and calls for action in Parliament, the UK government has yet to take decisive steps to support Ukraine with surplus military equipment. Examples like the promised donation of Scimitar tanks, which have instead been sold off, underscore the situation’s urgency.

While the UK has contributed drones and other military aid, much more can be done. With ongoing threats to Ukraine’s sovereignty, particularly from right-wing politicians in Europe and the US, the UK must step up its efforts to provide meaningful support.

The availability of military hardware could give Ukrainian forces a crucial advantage on the battlefield, potentially hastening victory and preventing further Russian aggression in Europe. The UK must prioritize donating surplus equipment to Ukraine rather than selling it.

A radical shift in approach is needed, one that focuses on providing sufficient aid for Ukraine to defeat Russian forces and reclaim their country decisively.

This starts with fulfilling promises of military assistance and standing in solidarity with the people of Ukraine in their fight for freedom and sovereignty.
