The Conservative Party finds itself embroiled in a fresh controversy surrounding allegations of racism, with former adviser Samuel Kasumu accusing Chancellor Rishi Sunak of using the diversity of the cabinet as a shield against criticism.

Kasumu’s remarks come in the wake of revelations about comments made by Tory donor Frank Hester, which have been widely condemned as racist and misogynistic.

Kasumu, a Black author and member of the Tory party, criticized Sunak’s handling of the situation, stating that the diverse composition of the cabinet should not serve as a justification for avoiding condemnation of racist remarks. He emphasized that leadership should be based on character and willingness to lead rather than skin color.

Kasumu expressed his bewilderment at the government’s response to the controversy, stating that he would not have tolerated the reluctance to denounce racist comments if he were still working in Downing Street.

The Guardian’s investigation into Frank Hester revealed disturbing remarks targeting Labour MP Diane Abbott, suggesting violence and expressing racist sentiments.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper faced scrutiny regarding the Conservative Party’s acceptance of donations from Hester, with questions raised about the party’s stance on race.

While Harper vehemently denied any racial problem within the party, Kasumu reiterated that diversity within the cabinet should not serve as a shield against addressing issues of racism.

Kasumu highlighted the need for genuine efforts to combat racism and foster inclusivity within the party. He emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and statements, regardless of their position or background.

Kasumu’s remarks underscored a broader call for meaningful action to address systemic racism and promote equality within political institutions.

The controversy surrounding Frank Hester’s remarks has reignited discussions about racism within the Conservative Party and raised questions about the party’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

As the fallout continues, pressure mounts on party leaders to confront these issues head-on and demonstrate a genuine commitment to combating racism in all its forms.
