Victor Cha, the senior vice president for Asia and Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), has raised concerns about the potential repercussions of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s reelection on U.S.-South Korea relations.

Speaking to South Korean correspondents in Paris, Cha warned that a second term for Trump could lead to significant shifts, including the withdrawal of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) or the cessation of joint military exercises with South Korea.

Cha emphasized that if Trump were to secure another term in office, he would likely prioritize resuming dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

This projection is based on anticipating heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea is expected to engage in multiple military provocations leading up to the U.S. presidential election in November.

According to Cha, Trump has consistently viewed South Korea as a financially prosperous nation with a robust military, prompting him to question the necessity of maintaining a U.S. military presence on the peninsula, particularly if diplomatic breakthroughs are achieved with North Korea.

Furthermore, Cha suggested that Trump might be receptive to the idea of South Korea pursuing unilateral nuclear armament. He indicated that the former president may not oppose Seoul’s development of a long-range ballistic missile system, underscoring Trump’s perceived lack of concern regarding the potential consequences of such actions.

Cha’s insights highlight the complexities and potential challenges that could arise in U.S.-South Korea relations under a renewed Trump presidency.

The possibility of policy shifts regarding military deployment and nuclear proliferation underscores the need for strategic foresight and diplomatic engagement to navigate the intricacies of the Korean Peninsula’s security landscape.

As both countries confront evolving regional dynamics, maintaining close coordination and cooperation will be paramount to addressing shared security concerns and promoting regional stability.
