During Wednesday morning’s House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing, titled “Influence Peddling: Examining Joe Biden’s Abuse of Public Office,” Democratic members seized the opportunity to confront witness Lev Parnas, a former associate of Rudy Giuliani, about the dubious nature of the allegations against then-candidate Biden.

Parnas, who has been convicted of campaign finance violations and wire fraud, testified that by May or June of 2019, both he and Giuliani recognized that the information they were gathering on Biden was largely fabricated by Russian agents.

Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin pressed Parnas on how he and Giuliani managed to promote these false allegations within the United States political system despite the skepticism of most media outlets.

Parnas acknowledged that while mainstream media outlets, excluding Fox News and some right-wing channels, were hesitant to entertain their claims, figures like Sean Hannity were instrumental in amplifying their narrative.

Parnas also implicated politicians like Senator Ron Johnson and Congressman Pete Sessions in facilitating the dissemination of Russian-backed misinformation.

Parnas characterized the investigation into the Biden family’s activities in Ukraine as a politically motivated hoax orchestrated by Giuliani and others, with full knowledge that the information originated from questionable sources serving Russian interests.

Republican-led committee hearings are losing credibility because there isn’t enough solid evidence to back up their claims. This lack of evidence is making people question how reliable these hearings are.

Recently, Fox News has been accused of avoiding facts that don’t support their narrative, which further adds to doubts about the credibility of these hearings.

To provide insight into the Republican Party’s messaging, we are joined by Patrick Gaspard, president of the Center for American Progress. Gaspard will share his thoughts on the true intentions behind the Republican Party’s relentless pursuit of baseless allegations and the implications for American democracy.
