Following a classified briefing in the Capitol, Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut warned that TikTok is akin to a weapon aimed at Americans’ heads, with Chinese communists potentially using the vast amounts of data collected from its 170 million American users to manipulate and influence democratic processes.
Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas echoed these concerns, describing TikTok as a grave national security threat due to its potential to compromise user privacy and security. He also highlighted the platform’s susceptibility to Chinese Communist propaganda efforts.
The House recently passed bipartisan legislation aimed at effectively banning TikTok in the United States if its Chinese owners fail to divest the app.
In response, senior officials from the FBI, Justice Department, and the Office of the Director of Intelligence held a classified briefing for members of the Senate Intelligence and Commerce committees.
Senators who attended the briefing called for the declassification of relevant intelligence, arguing that the American people deserve to be informed about the potential risks posed by TikTok.
Sen. Blumenthal emphasized the importance of transparency, stating that there is no reason to keep such information secret from the public.
Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell, a Democrat from Washington State, refrained from providing a timeline for advancing legislation in the Senate but affirmed the importance of addressing the issue. She emphasized the need for new tools in the information age to tackle emerging threats like those posed by TikTok.
